Welcome to EDUCATION NATION where we will share a specific meal prep / clean eating related topic with you each day!

Today is all about how “the scale is not here for you“!

You see, truth be told, too many women rely far too much on that darn scale.  I would venture to say, some of us are actually addicted to the bright number that appears between our toes. Sadly, the scale alone is not the best predictor of weight loss success.

I liken the scale to a bad boyfriend. Some days he is down, down, down for you! Other days, without notice, he jumps UP and leaves you depressed; only to come back down for you again. STOP THE YO YO! Drop that “loser”.

The scale is great for long term trending, but not for day to day weighing. The BEST reflection of your work are your pictures, your measurements & how your clothes fit!

So, before we move on, we have some documenting to do! Yup, and once again, we will be doing this together as a SISTERHOOD!  So grab your pen, print your *FREE* measurement tracking sheet (click here) and document your *STARTING* measurements TODAY!  Trust me, they will be changing soon!!

“5 Reasons Why The Scale is NOT to be trusted!”

 1.  Did you WEIGH YOURSELF at the same time?

The number on the scale will be different if you weigh yourself at different times of the day.  Your body weight can fluctuate 3-5 pounds throughout the day.  Make sure to identify the best time for your consistently weigh, and use the same time for your weekly weigh-ins.

2.  Did you WEIGH YOURSELF with the same clothes?

Clothes, shoes, socks are all reflected on the scale! Girl, even weave weight is reflected! LOL 🙂  I personally weigh myself 1st thing in the morning in my birthday suit, immediately after going to the ‘powder room’.  If you choose to wear clothes, make sure its the same or similar weight / amount of clothes.

3.  Did you WEIGH YOURSELF during TOM or Ovulation?

TOM = Time of the month, and the scale can move up 5 pounds during TOM & in my case even ovulation. This has to do with water retention and bloating during this time of the month.  So, be sure NOT to freak out if the scale creeps up, especially if you know TOM is visiting soon!

“It’s not about how bad you WANT it, it’s about how HARD you are willing to FIGHT to get it!”

4. Did you WEIGH YOURSELF after a recent airplane flight?

Yup, even a 2-1/2 hour airplane flight can cause that scale to act a fool!  That cabin pressure on a plane can cause bloating. Isn’t that cray!!  So again, don’t dismay, if the scale has increased and you’ve recently taken a flight!  This MAY be the cause!

5. Did you WEIGH YOURSELF after you started strength training?

Oh gosh!
Yes, weight training can cause the scale to go up, But it is NOT NOT NOT because muscle weighs more than fat.

Divas, please remember 5 pounds is 5 pounds whether it’s fat or muscle.

So, when weight training, the scale may stay the same or even increase because as you are LOSING FAT,  you are also GAINING MUSCLE at the same time!  So it is actually possible that you may LOOK smaller (because muscle takes up less space), but weigh more.

Oh my gosh when I started this journey, the scale was not my friend. I expected to lose so much after 21days of meal planning. Not! But my mantra kept me a float. And we great coaches and encouragers, I stayed the course and trusted the inches. And low and behold by the end of the challenge, I could tell from the pics that I lost alot of inches. My body had transformed. So yes, don’t depend on the scale for your results. Measurements/inches and how your clothes fit are going to be your guiding tool! Love this blog post because it is so true! So many things could be going on for the scale not to act right! I plan to take my measurements when I get home.

I love the analogy of the bad boyfriend and the scale. You know you don’t need but you can’t stay away!

  • Aleta says:

I also can understand the analogy of the boyfriend and school. I love the scale. I love to get on it in am and again before going to bed I see if what I ate for the day contributed to the loss or gain on the scale. I do believe a picture and measuring yourself can also tell the story for a person weight loss journey. Here we go 😃!
