THE SUPERFOOD OF THE DAY: GARBANZO BEANS!
Second on our list of our select 10 SuperFoods are Garbanzo Beans sis! Also called chickpeas, garbanzo beans are a staple in the Mediterranean region as well as in India. Their nutlike flavor is delicious, whether you’re enjoying whole beans, popular dishes like hummus or crunchy roasted chickpeas, which make an amazing snack or a great “crouton” in salads. A very nutrient-dense food, just one cup of these cooked beans provides 12.5 grams of fiber (wow), or about half the recommended amount of one day. Like many other beans, they’re also a great plant-based source of protein, and garbanzo beans are also a good source for many nutrients, including manganese, folate and antioxidants.
Just in case you didn’t know Manganese is a mineral that is considered an essential nutrient, because the body requires it to function properly. Garbanzo beans are a great source of manganese, check out the power of this powerful mineral diva:
- Increases Bone Health

#6 just took me out! That explains why my cramps have been lighter during my most recent Vegan challenge! Can you believe chick peas can help reduce PMS Symptoms? WOW! Click To Tweet
ALSO TRY: If you don’t have or don’t like garbanzo beans, try other similar beans. Lima beans and northern white beans are mild and creamy and make good substitutes for chickpeas in recipes. Both are similarly excellent sources of fiber and protein.
How to Buy & Enjoy GARBANZO BEANS!
Surprisingly, the process of canning beans actually makes them more nutritious. You can always start with dreied beans, but you can also feel good and about buying canned (and bagged/boxed) versions of these legumes.
When cooking beans in a liquid, be sure to consume the liquid too – or you’ll lose many of the nutrients. You can also let the cooked beans sit in the liquid of up to an hour before serving to reabsorb some of the leached nutrients.
Add acidic, sweet and calcium-rich ingredients to beans when cooking them for a long time, ro preserve their structure and texture. Molasses and tomatoes combine all these elements, and the flavors pair well with all kinds of beans
Look for various forms of chickpea, including the large, cream colored version oand the smaller, darker version plus, chana dal, or garbanzo flour.
